Overview[]
Thors agrees to leave Iceland to join the Jomsvikings in the upcoming Danish invasion of England, knowing his refusal would put the village at risk. Thorfinn, despite being only six, wants to join and finds his father's war chest. Thors tells Thorfinn that he has no enemies and that there is no one he should want to hurt. Thors agrees to take five village boys to war with him, though unbeknownst to them, he plans to drop them in Norway and have Leif bring them back to the village on his knarr. After they've traveled too far to turn back, Thorfinn reveals he has stowed away on his father's ship. In the Faroe Islands, Floki conducts a deal with Askeladd to kill Thors for a hundred gold coins. Askeladd accepts, though he raises the price and deduces this is in reality Floki's own ploy. When Thors and Leif's party reaches the Faroe Islands, where they plan to briefly stop to replenish their supplies and trade, they notice something is off and start to turn back, but they are trapped in the inlet by Askeladd's men, who push in debris from the surrounding cliffs. Thors neutralizes the approaching pirates with his bare hands without severely wounding any of them. He deduces Askeladd is the leader and challenges him to a duel, asking that he and his men leave them be if he wins. Askeladd accepts. Thors wins, but refuses to kill Askeladd, asking for his surrender. Bjorn takes Thorfinn hostage and tells Thors to drop his sword. Understanding that Askeladd only wants his death, Thors reminds Askeladd that he won the duel and throws away his sword. Askeladd signals to his archers on the cliffside and they loose their arrows into Thors. Askeladd honours his word and lets Leif and the remaining men leave after Thors dies. His band takes Thors's ship, which the village boys cannot sail without Thors. Thorfinn, who had hidden away in his father's ship's hold, comes up and swears he will kill Askeladd. Askeladd leaves Thorfinn be, assuming he will die soon in any case.
Summary[]
Thors agrees to join the Jomsvikings in the coming Danish invasion of England, lest the village be forced to pay the price of his refusal. Floki invites any villages who wish it to join Thors in coming to Jomsborg to join the war. Thorfinn wants to join, despite being only six, and looks for real weapons at home and finds Thors's old war chest. Thors takes the shortsword Thorfinn has found and asks him who he intends to kill, impressing on him that no one has any enemies. Thorfinn is angry at being treated like a child and runs off. Thors cannot find Thorfinn to say goodbye before leaving the village, taking five village boys with him. Leif reveals to a village girl that Thors intends to drop the boys off in Norway instead of bringing them to war with him; Leif's knarr, which will follow Thors's ship, will take them back to the village. After they've traveled too far to turn back, Thorfinn comes out of one of the ship's barrels, revealing he had stowed away on his father's ship.
In the Faroe Islands, Floki conducts a deal with Askeladd and his band to kill Thors for a hundred gold coins, stating Thors was sentenced to die by the Jomsvikings' Chief fifteen years ago as punishment for deserting. Askeladd accepts, though he successfully doubles the price and deduces that the assassination is Floki's own ploy and that the Jomsvikings are contracting it out because they could not hide their potential losses from their Chief.
On the sea, Thors tells Ari about how he married the Jomsvikings' Chief's daughter, Helga, fifteen years prior, and of how he became afraid of battle after their daughter Ylva was born. When they arrive at the Faroe Islands to stop and replenish their supplies the next morning, Leif notices something is amiss and starts to turn back along with Thors's ship, but they are trapped in the inlet by debris pushed down from the surrounding cliffs by Askeladd's men. Thors grabs his sword and sets out to stop the attacking pirates by himself, successfully neutralizing them with his bare hands without killing them or wounding them severely. He is able to stop Bjorn in a similar fashion, despite the latter going berserk after consuming a berserker mushroom. Thors deduces Askeladd is the Viking band's leader and challenges him to a duel, asking that he and his men leave immediately if he wins. Thors wins the duel, but refuses to kill Askeladd and asks for his surrender. Askeladd says that as his men's leader, admitting defeat is the only thing he cannot do. He asks Thors if he will lead their band, but plays off his offer as a joke when he realizes Thors will not accept. Bjorn, who has regained consciousness and is no longer in a berserk state, takes Thorfinn hostage and tells Thors to drop his sword. Askeladd asks the angry Thors if he really expected them to be honourable and stay bound to the duel's customs. He tells Thors all he wants is his life. Thors says he knows, reminds Askeladd that he won the duel, and throws the sword he is holding away. Askeladd understands Thors's action and signals to his archers on the cliff, who loose arrows into Thors as Thorfinn watches and screams. Bjorn lets Thorfinn go and he runs to his dying father. Thors instructs Leif to bring his head to Jomsborg so that the Chief will not go after the village under the assumption that Thors ran away or hid. Thorfinn embraces him and Thors dies.
Askeladd honours Thors's request and lets Leif and the village boys go. His band take Thors's ship, as the village boys cannot sail it without him. Thorfinn is revealed to have stowed away in his father's ship's hold. He swears he will kill Askeladd. Askeladd's man asks if they should throw Thorfinn overboard, but Askeladd declines, saying Thorfinn will die soon enough in any case.

The second volume was originally released 17 November, 2005, under the label of Weekly Shonen Magazine. After the series was moved to Monthly Afternoon, the first two volumes were re-released under Afternoon label, with few additional pages and different volume covers.
